Trend-Day Bounces

Why the +436 at 10:05 was the start of the move down, not a bounce — and why the next four bounces were the same trade. Every print below is from the live footprint.

The setup — what had already happened by 10:00

ES 5-minute footprint, Oct 30 2026, 9:15 to 11:00

ES DEC26, 5-minute volumetric bars, 9:15–11:00 AM ET. Green cells = more buying at the ask; red = more selling at the bid. The bigger the number, the more lopsided.

The card had called the day a trend day (five of five tells). The 9:30 bar took the overnight low on about −5,000 of delta and 15 points (−412 → −684). At 9:35–9:40 the sellers hit the 10-day balance low with −1,082 and −913 and got nothing below 7650; +689 answered and the bar closed back above the stack — the bottom rule, a scalp back to the broken floor at 7664–67. That scalp was done by 10:00. The question at 10:00 was only this: is the bounce over, and where is the re-entry short?

Look at the 10:05 bar on the chart. The +436 is the top cell — the highest price the bar traded. Directly underneath it, inside the same bar, the cells turn red: −225, −105, −59, −343. The bar opened at the high and closed eleven points lower. Ask the three questions:

Where?7667.50 — the top of 7664–67, the overnight low that broke at 9:30. A broken floor is a ceiling; the card had just named it as the bounce target and a known seller. Progress?None. The +436 was the bar's high. Nobody paid the buyer a single tick. Answer?Yes, and immediately: −225 one row under it, −343 two rows under it — inside the bar, not the next one. The 10:10 bar added −471 three points lower.

That is the last buyer, fast form, and because the answer came inside the bar it was visible before the bar closed. Two more tells sat beside it:

  • The greens were shrinking: +689 (9:45) → +563 (10:00) → +436 (10:05) while price made a higher high. Rising price on falling aggression is a move running out of buyers.
  • Cumulative delta was at a lower high. The bounce from 7650 to 7668 took session CVD from −8,700 to about −8,000; the 9:30 level was −1,700. The buyers were nowhere near undoing the morning's selling.

The trade: sell-stop under the 10:05 bar's low the moment +436 printed at the top with the reds under it (the pre-arm). Filled at 10:10 around 7655, stop above 7668.25, first target the 10-day balance low 7648–54, second target the analog low. It ran 25 points before the first bounce.

Why a big green at the top of a bar is bearish

A green cell means buyers were aggressive there: they lifted offers. It does not mean they won. Every one of those buys was filled by someone with a sell order resting at that price — a passive seller who never shows up in the delta. If the market keeps rising after the print, the passive seller ran out and the buyers won. If the print is the high of the bar and the next cells are red, the passive seller absorbed every contract and then pushed back. The green number is the size of the crowd that just got trapped.

At a level the card named as supply (a broken floor, a prior value edge, a stack from above), the odds of the second outcome are high — that is exactly where the passive sellers are. So the rule has two halves: where (a named seller) and shape (biggest green at the top, no progress). In the middle of nowhere a +436 is noise.

The five bounces — same shape every time

Six, in fact. After the second one the pattern itself is the information. On a trend day you are not looking for the bounce that works — you are waiting for the biggest green of each bounce to print at the top of its bar at the next ceiling, and selling the red that answers it. The stop goes above the bounce high; the target is the next level on the card.

What a bounce that works looks like, for contrast: the biggest green prints at the bottom of the bar or in its middle, price closes above it, and the next bar makes a higher high before any red answers. That shape appeared once all day — at 2:35 PM.

Rising CVD on falling price

ES 5-minute chart with session cumulative delta, full day

The full day with the session cumulative-delta panel underneath. From 10:30 to 2:30 the delta climbs from −15,000 to +13,000 while price falls from 7630 to 7560.

This is the picture that explains why none of the bounces held. For four hours the aggressive side was the buyers, and price fell anyway. Every one of those 28,000 net contracts of buying was absorbed by a passive seller sitting above price. Rising delta with falling price is not a bullish divergence waiting to pay — it is the market telling you who the fuel is. The dip buyers were building the inventory that the next leg down liquidated.

The practical read: when CVD is rising and price is not, do not buy. When CVD is rising, price is not, and the biggest green of the bar is at its top — that is the short.

The turn — three things at once

VIX one-minute chart, Oct 30 2026

VIX, one-minute. The peak at 23.9 is 14:30 to the minute — the same bar as the −1,390.

  • Referee: the VIX peaked at 14:30 and fell to 19.4 by the close. The referee turned.
  • Capitulation print: −1,390 at 7562, the biggest red of the day, with +613 and +280 above it in the same bar — the mirror of the 10:05 shape — followed by a 20-point green bar.
  • Divergence finally paid: delta was already +13,000 at the low. The divergence had been there for hours; it needed the referee.
ES footprint 2:55 to 4:40

2:55–4:40. The rally into the close; +2,239 and +1,293 at 3:55 are month-end rebalancing buys.

Rules this day left on the card

Last buyer at the top of the bar. Biggest green of the bounce at a named seller, printed in the bar's top row with no progress, answered by a red of at least half its size — in the same bar or the next. Pre-arm the sell-stop under the bar when the green appears; sell the answer; stop above the bounce high.

Shrinking greens on a higher high (+689 → +563 → +436) are the slow-form warning that the fast form is coming.

After the second failed bounce on a trend day, stop buying greens. The pattern repeats until the referee turns. Rising CVD with falling price confirms it: the buyers are the fuel.

The turn needs all three: the VIX peak and roll-over, the biggest red of the day answered inside its own bar, and the delta divergence already in place. Two of three is another bounce.
