Friday Oct 30, 2026. Five bounces, each one the same shape: the biggest green at the top of the bar, answered by the next bar. The turn came only when the VIX peaked.
The five tells — all on the card or on the screen before the bell
| Tell | Friday | Why it matters |
| 1. Gap of at least one average range, beyond the whole prior range | −1.33 ATR; overnight high 7713 under Thursday's low 7725 | No overlap means nobody who traded yesterday has a position at today's prices; there is no value to rotate back to. Gap fills on this fingerprint: 11%. |
| 2. Overnight high below the prior low (or low above the prior high) | yes | The overnight already failed to re-enter yesterday's range. |
| 3. VIX direction since the prior close | 18.5 → 19.19 by 9:28, rising every leg | Direction beats level. A rising referee says the break is real. |
| 4. Overnight flow | cumulative delta −4,500 at 8:00, never recovered above −1,500 | Sellers hit all night and kept hitting into the open — not one dump, a lean. |
| 5. Gap score | MGI 0–3 bears | Every reference above price. The weakest of the five on its own. |
Three or more, with the gap tell present, is a trend day. Friday had all five.
How the card scores them
The card now computes the five tells at build time. Three of five with the gap tell present flips it:
- the lean badge moves to the with-trend setup — D′ or D on a gap down, A on a gap up;
- the counter-trend setups are rewritten: "hold the edge" becomes a scalp to the first level only; "buy the stack" becomes bottom rule only, no resting limit;
- the plain-words box says TREND DAY and lists the tells; the Checks table shows the row in red;
- the history takeaway switches to the down-case median and the 75th-percentile tail as the base case.
Two of five is a watch: the third tell is a one-directional 9:30 bar of ten points or more that closes on its extreme.
What the open did
| Time | Print | Rule |
| 7:55 | −597 at the overnight low 7664, no follow-through for an hour | first hit = warning, not yet the trap |
| 9:30 | −412 → −686, about −5,000 for the bar, 15 points, closed on the low, VIX up | the second, bigger hit through the level: D′. The sell-stop on the card was 7663.25 |
| 9:35–9:40 | −1,082 / −913 at 7660 got nothing below 7650; +689 answered; close back above 7654 | bottom rule at the ★★★ stack → ran to the broken floor 7664–67 and stopped there |
| 9:55–10:00 | +563 / +436 at 7665–68 at the top of their bars, cumulative delta far below its earlier high, −343 next bar | last buyer at the old floor — the re-entry short |
| 10:10 | 7648 (10-day balance low) broke on −692; +535 printed with −407 / −250 under it in the same bar | a buyer hit inside his own bar is being run over — gap and go |
Why every bounce failed
From 10:30 to 2:30 the cumulative delta rose from −15,000 to +13,000 while price fell from 7630 to 7560. Aggressive buyers all afternoon, and price went down anyway: a passive seller sat above every one of them. Rising delta on falling price is the most bearish picture order flow can draw — the dip buyers are the fuel. And each bounce had the same shape:
| Bounce | Last buyer | Answer |
| 10:20 | +1,176 at 7641 | −1,036 next bar |
| 10:45–10:50 | +1,010 / +699 at 7655–58, retest of 7648 from below | −632 same bar, −458 / −281 by 11:05 |
| 11:25 | +594 at 7643 | −493 / −741 / −931 |
| 1:05 | +821 at 7614 | −645 |
| 1:45 | +797 at 7607 | −287 / −224 |
After the second one the pattern itself is the signal: on a trend day, do not buy a green that prints at the top of its bar.
Where the bottom was
Three things at once, at 2:30 PM:
- the VIX peaked at 23.9 and turned straight down to 19.4 — the referee flipped;
- the biggest red of the day, −1,390 at 7562, printed with +613 / +280 above it in the same bar, followed by a 20-point green bar;
- the cumulative delta was already +13,000 with price at the low — the divergence finally paid once the referee turned.
Then 3:55 PM: +2,239 and +1,293. Month-end rebalancing buying into the bell. That line is now on every month-end card.
Rules the day left
Trend-day filter. Gap ≥ 1 ATR beyond the prior range + no overnight overlap + VIX rising into 9:30 + overnight flow leaning + a one-sided gap score. Three or more = trend day: trade only the with-trend branch; the stack is a target; the only counter-trend trade is the bottom rule for a scalp back to the broken floor.
On a trend day: keep the with-trend resting order in through 9:30; after the second failed bounce stop buying greens; cumulative delta rising while price falls is absorption, not a bottom; a buyer hit inside his own bar is being run over; the turn needs the VIX peak, the biggest red answered inside the bar, and the delta divergence — all three.
What was not knowable: the size. The look-alike days' 75th-percentile tail was −74 points; Friday ran −110. That is why partials at every stack matter, and why one trade taken and closed by 10:40 was the right day, not a missed one.
